The 156-volt DC brush motor needs a break-in period. It usually takes between 300 to 500 miles for the brushes to break in and become "seated" or contoured to the curvature of the coNmGutator. Your NmG will then run a little more quietly and efficiently.

Until the brushes have broken in, excess current from the controller caused by sudden and fast acceleration can cause electrical arcing in the motor. (If this occurs, you will hear a loud bang.) This can be damaging to the motor, so it is recoNmGended that for the first 500 miles of driving in your new NmG, take care not to accelerate quickly or suddenly.

IMPORTANT: DAMAGE CAN OCCUR FROM ARCING IN THE MOTOR IF ACCELERATION IS SUDDEN OR FAST. During the first 500 miles of driving, accelerate slowly and gently.

Every two to five years the brushes in the motor will need to be replaced. The frequency of brush replacement depends upon driving habits and environmental conditions. Very dirty, dusty driving areas such as unpaved or gravel roads will cause much more debris and grit to get into the motor, increasing the wear and tear on the brushes. If you drive your NmG in these conditions, be sure to inform your authorized NmG dealer when you bring your NmG in for servicing.
